One way we can observe this adaptability is through Heart Rate Variability (HRV). HRV measures the tiny variations in time between each heartbeat. A healthy nervous system doesn’t beat like a metronome, it continually adjusts to meet the body’s changing needs.
In general, higher HRV is associated with greater resilience and recovery, while persistently lower HRV may suggest the body is under ongoing physiological stress. Although it isn’t a diagnosis on its own, it can provide valuable insight into how well the nervous system is adapting.
Another important part of this system is the vagus nerve . As one of the main communication pathways of the parasympathetic nervous system, it connects the brain with the heart, lungs, digestive system and many other organs, helping regulate breathing, heart rate, digestion, immune function and inflammation.
The most encouraging part is that the nervous system responds to small, consistent experiences of safety.
Every slow breath.
Every mindful movement.

Recognising the pattern is often the first step towards understanding why you’re feeling the way you do, and what you can do about it.

Perhaps the most encouraging thing we’ve learnt about the nervous system is this:
It is not fixed.
It is constantly adapting to your experiences, your environment and the way you repeatedly move, breathe, think and respond to stress.
This remarkable ability to change is known as neuroplasticity—the brain’s capacity to form and strengthen new neural pathways throughout life.
Simply put, your nervous system is always learning.
If it has learnt to remain on high alert, it can also learn to feel safer, become more adaptable and return more easily to a state of rest and recovery.
One way we can observe this adaptability is through Heart Rate Variability (HRV). HRV measures the tiny variations in time between each heartbeat. A healthy nervous system doesn’t beat like a metronome, it continually adjusts to meet the body’s changing needs.
In general, higher HRV is associated with greater resilience and recovery, while persistently lower HRV may suggest the body is under ongoing physiological stress. Although it isn’t a diagnosis on its own, it can provide valuable insight into how well the nervous system is adapting.
Another important part of this system is the vagus nerve . As one of the main communication pathways of the parasympathetic nervous system, it connects the brain with the heart, lungs, digestive system and many other organs, helping regulate breathing, heart rate, digestion, immune function and inflammation.
The most encouraging part is that the nervous system responds to small, consistent experiences of safety.
Every slow breath.
Every mindful movement.
Every opportunity to rest.
Every moment your body experiences safety rather than threat.
These seemingly simple experiences send powerful signals to the brain that it is safe to move away from survival mode and back towards recovery.

Recovery isn’t something we can force, but it is something we create the right conditions for.
Every choice we make either signals “I’m safe.” or “Stay alert.”
Over time, these repeated signals influence how easily the nervous system can move between protection and recovery.
Here are seven of the most effective ways we encourage this transition in clinical practice.
The way you breathe tells your brain a story.
Rapid, shallow breathing is interpreted as a sign that something requires your attention.
Slow, diaphragmatic breathing, particularly when the exhalation is longer than the inhalation, stimulates the vagus nerve and encourages the parasympathetic nervous system to become more active.
This isn’t simply about relaxation.
It’s about giving your brain evidence that it no longer needs to stay on high alert.
Try: Several times throughout the day, slow your breathing for two or three minutes. Breathe quietly through your nose and allow the exhale to become longer than the inhale.
Many people think exercise automatically improves stress, and sometimes it does, but sometimes it becomes just another stressor.
If you’re already living in survival mode, constantly pushing harder can reinforce the message that your body is never getting an opportunity to recover.
Movement should improve your nervous system’s adaptability, not simply your fitness.
Clinical Pilates, walking, yoga and Qi Gong all help restore movement quality, improve breathing mechanics, reduce muscular guarding and remind the brain that movement can feel safe again.
Rather than asking,
“How many calories did I burn?” try asking, “How does my body feel after moving?”
Poor sleep is often a consequence of the way you are treating your body and mind.
Recovery begins with what happens during the day.
A nervous system that has remained switched on throughout the day doesn’t suddenly become calm because it’s 10:30 pm.
Natural light in the morning, regular movement, stable blood sugar, reducing stimulation in the evening and creating a predictable bedtime routine all help prepare the brain for restorative sleep.
Sleep is not simply unconsciousness.
It’s one of the body’s most important opportunities to repair tissue, regulate hormones, consolidate memories and restore the nervous system.

Although the brain represents only 2% of your body weight, it consumes approximately 20% of your body’s resting energy.
It also uses around 20% of your body’s oxygen and 20–25% of its glucose at rest.

Clenched jaws.
